Hi Beautiful Souls!
I spent a lot of this summer traveling to Italy and Greece for my honeymoon. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to go to these places, not only because they’re beautiful (obviously) but because I’m a crazy mythology nut.
A few years ago, I had a past life reading on Etsy (from Martini readings - she’s awesome!) and I was told that I went to Greece to discover ancient wisdom and initiate into the mysteries. This was pretty wild because I’m constantly working through initiations AND obsessed with Greek mythology, neither of which I had told Autumn, the reader.
So of course, I went to Europe as soon as possible (which ended up being a few years later due to 2020 and all that).
The whole trip was incredible - I could talk for days. But the biggest realization I had was swimming in a grotto. The stones and the water were quite literally ALIVE and I can’t even describe the feeling, except it was almost like I took drugs (but I didn’t). The energy was SO powerful and I knew the gods were there.
That’s when I realized: the land holds energy. Not just in a fun, fruity kind of way, but true, deep, ancestral energy.
And when I came back to New England, there was a different energy, but still just as powerful.
Everything around us emulates the energy of the land. For example, look at the popular decor in your area. You’ll find that much of the decor is based on nature, and what feels right in your area. I LOVE the stonework of Europe, but it simply wouldn’t work here in New England. Instead, we need cozy rooms and wood fireplaces to get through the winter.
OK, but why does this matter? Well, if you're doing magic or shadow work but not in touch with the land spirits and energy around you, then you're leaving a lot on the table. The land is a built-in energy vortex that you quite literally live with.
So get in touch with the land you live on. Go outside and sit in nature, and see what you feel. What does the energy remind you of? If you had to set it to music, would it be classical, drums, eerie, or something else?
Learn about the deities of your land and think about the metaphors behind these deities. What animals show up often? What elements are referenced?
And then, of course, there are the seasonal cycles. Almost everywhere has them, but these cycles feel different in each place. And our bodies become tuned into these cycles, meaning our magic does, too.
Alex
P.S. I’m NOT saying you can’t work with deities outside of their “land.” I’m working heavily with Greek deities since I got back (using the book Modern Witchcraft with the Greek Gods) and I’m still able to connect with them here in New England. The energy is just as potent inside me, though I don’t feel as much of a connection to these deities in the land around me. But it’s worth exploring both paths because your body really does sync up with the land you live on.
